The Netherlands-USSR Association, founded in 1947, aimed to interest a wide audience in Russian culture. The Association showed Russian films and propaganda meetings with Russian music. The Association also organized group trips to Russia, and from 1954 it was possible to bring Russian artists to the Netherlands. The Association was viewed in a very negative light by the Dutch government, which was very wary of everything that came from Russia.
Wim Hulst first worked there as secretary and from 1967 to 1989 as chairman; Hulst was also director of Vernu, the travel agency of the Dutch-USSR Association for a long time. The association also published a monthly magazine and organized trips to the Soviet Union.
