The famous Red Star radio, Zvezda 54, made in the Soviet Union 1954/55. The radio “Zvezda-54” was first made in Kharkiv “Komunar” Works, (1954) and after modernization in “ZH-68” Works (secret subsidiary MEMZ No. 1 factory, Moscow, CCCP, 1955).
The radio cabinet is made of red sprayed metal with a kind of snakeskin pattern. It soon acquired the name “Red Star”. The first owner bought it new in 1954 in Budapest. Later bought by 2nd owner, a radio collector, where it stood still for 17 years on a shelf in his collection. Recently the radio has been fully checked, cleaned and parts replaced where necessary by a radio specialist. The potentiometer, on/off and volume, has been replaced by him, just like the power cable. He has also made the adjustments to let it play over WiFi. The signals come in via the pick-up connection.
What makes this radio so special is that it uses the original amplifier and speakers. So 100% the original Red Star sound, but no longer dependent on what is playing on the radio, which is nowadays very limited. It works with a Chromecast, included in the purchase. It can of course also be connected to a telephone, mp3, tablet, etc. with a standard plug.
You can adjust the volume on your Tablet, Phone or MP3 player, but you can also use the volume button on the radio itself. The lamps that illuminate the dial and star are original. Free with the purchase is 1 set of cool white and 1 set of warm white LED lamps (set = 2 pieces, 4 in total), which burn slightly brighter. There is also a wiring diagram The Paint, Mirror dial, and Back plate are all original. The Magic eye also still works, so completely fine.
However, stains, scratches, dents and damage have occurred over the past 70 years, see photos. The pictures of the amplifier and speakers were taken when they just came back from the radio specialist. Beautiful radio that is not only decorative, but can actually be used all day without restrictions. YouTube film is partially blocked because radio music was playing “The Beatles” and that is not allowed due to copyright, very lame but the whole video can be heard, only the piece of music from The beatles not. Red Star on WiFi! welcome to the 21st century.
