Pennant made in the DDR, 1973. The pennant is made to celebrate the 20th. anniversary of the victory of the East German state over the uprising in 1953. The East German uprising of 1953 was an uprising that occurred in East Germany from 16 to 17 June 1953. It began with a strike action by construction workers in East Berlin on 16 June against work quotas during the Sovietization process in East Germany. Demonstrations in East Berlin turned into a widespread uprising against the Government of East Germany and the Socialist Unity Party the next day, involving over one million people in about 700 localities across the country. Protests against declining living standards and unpopular Sovietization policies led to a wave of strikes and protests that were not easily brought under control and threatened to overthrow the East German government. The uprising in East Berlin was violently suppressed by tanks of the Soviet forces in Germany and the Kasernierte Volkspolizei, while demonstrations continued in over 500 towns and villages for several more days before dying out. The Combat Groups of the Working Class was formed on 1953, in response to the Uprising of 1953 in the German Democratic Republic (GDR or East Germany) which had occurred three months earlier, and was violently suppressed by the Volkspolizei. The association worked closely with the National People’s Army (NVA) in order to give children a pre militairy and discipline training.

DDR pennant made in 1977. The text on the pennant reads:”His name is obligation”. Georg Ewald (1926-1973) was a German politician (SED). He was Minister for Agriculture, Forestry and Foodstuffs of the GDR. After attending agricultural school, Ewald worked on his parents’ farm until he was drafted into the Wehrmacht in 1943. From 1946 to 1949 Ewald worked on farms and became a member of the FDJ and SED in 1946. In 1949/1950 he was mayor of his home town and from 1950 to 1953 he was a district councilor for agriculture, a member of the Stralsund district council and a member of the SED district leadership. From 1954 to 1955 Ewald attended the party college and then worked as first secretary in the SED district administrations in Bad Doberan and Rügen. From 1960 to 1963, Ewald was first secretary of the SED district leadership in Neubrandenburg and a member of the district parliament, then a member of the Central Committee of the SED, candidate for the Politburo of the Central Committee of the SED and a member of the Presidium of the Council of Ministers. He was chairman of the Agricultural Council and the Council for Agricultural Production and Food Sector at the Council of Ministers and from 1971 to 1973 Minister for Agriculture, Forestry and Food Sector of the GDR. Ewald died in a car accident near Gotha on September 14, 1973. His urn was buried in the Socialist Memorial at the Friedrichsfelde Central Cemetery in Berlin-Lichtenberg.

Friedrich Wilhelm Reinhold Pieck (1876-1960) was a German communist politician. In 1949, he became the first, and only President of the German Democratic Republic, and the office was abolished upon his death. His successor as head of state was the collective Council of State, whose chairman, and thus most prominent member, was SED First Secretary Walter Ulbricht. In 1919 Pieck, along with Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht was arrested in Berlin for their political activities. Liebknecht and Luxemburg were then killed while “being taken to prison” . While the two were being murdered, Pieck managed to escape.

The Ernst Thalmann Pioneer Organisation, consisting of the Young Pioneers and the Thälmann Pioneers, was a youth organisation of schoolchildren aged 6 to 14. They were named after Ernst Thälmann, the former leader of the Communist Party of Germany who was executed at the Buchenwald concentration camp. The group was a subdivision of the Freie Deutsche Jugend (FDJ, Free German Youth), East Germany’s youth movement. It was founded in 1948 and broke apart in 1989 on German reunification. From the 1960s and 1970s, nearly all schoolchildren between ages 6 and 14 were organised into Young Pioneer or Thälmann Pioneer groups. The pioneer group was loosely based on Scouting, but organised in such a way as to teach schoolchildren aged 6 – 14 socialist ideology and prepare them for the Freie Deutsche Jugend, the FDJ. Its organisation was similar to Scouting and other such organisations. Afternoons spent at the pioneer group mainly consisted of a mixture of adventure, myth-like socialist teaching and the upkeep of revolutionary traditions.

The NVA was formed in 1956 to succeed the Kasernierte Volkspolizei (Barracked People’s Police) and influenced by the Soviet Army, becoming one of the Warsaw Pact militaries opposing NATO during the Cold War. The majority of NATO officers rated the NVA the best military in the Warsaw Pact based on discipline, thoroughness of training, and the quality of officer leadership. The NVA did not see significant combat but participated in the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968, deployed military advisors to communist governments in other countries, and manned the Berlin Wall where they were responsible for numerous deaths. The NVA was dissolved in 1990 and its facilities and equipment were handed over to the Bundeswehr (the armed forces of West Germany), which also absorbed most of its personnel below the rank of non-commissioned officer.

The Ministry of National Defense (MFNV) was the chief administrative arm of the East German National People’s Army. The MFNV was modeled on the Ministry of Defense of the Soviet Union. The headquarters of the Ministry was in Strausberg near East Berlin. The Guard Regiment Hugo Eberlein provided security and guard services to the Ministry. The Ministry also had its own publishing house, Military publishing house of the German Democratic Republic.
