At the beginning of World War II, the town had an important Jewish population representing 28% of the inhabitants. As soon as the Germans occupied the town, Jews were kept imprisoned in a ghetto and were later murdered in mass executions perpetrated by Einsatzgruppen.

From 1753 to 1764, Slovianoserbsk was the capital of Russian territory Slavo-Serbia as Podgornoie In 1764 Slavo-Serbia was transformed into the Donets county and in 1784 the city was renamed into Donetskoie. In 1817 both county and its county seat were changed to Slavianoserbsk. Soon after the Ukrainian independence of 1918, Ukrainian form of Slovianoserbsk was adopted as well.

Pin made in the Ukraine. The text on the pin reads:”Kirovograd” now known as Kropyvnytskyi. Kropyvnytskyi is a city in central Ukraine on the Inhul river. It is an administrative center of the Kirovohrad Oblast. Population: 222,695 (2021).
During the Russian Civil War, the city witnessed intense fighting. On 7 May 1919, paramilitary leader, and former divisional general in the Red Army, Nikifor Grigoriev, launched an anti-Bolshevik uprising. On 8 May 1919, he issued a proclamation “To the Ukrainian People”, in which he called upon the Ukrainian people to rise against the “Communist imposters”, singling out the “Jewish commissars” and the Cheka. In only a few weeks, Grigoriev’s troops perpetrated 148 pogroms, the deadliest of which resulted in the massacre of upwards of 1,000 Jewish people in Yelisavetgrad, from 15 to 17 May 1919. In total, about 3,000 Jews died in the city.
The Soviet Red Army eventually reconquered the city in 1920. In World War II Kropyvnytskyi was occupied by Nazi Germany from 5 August 1941. It was subsequently recaptured by Soviet forces on 8 January 1944.

Population: 6,708 (2021 est.). The area was most likely named as such because the plentiful pine forests which have populated the area for ages. The name was first recorded in the Hypatian Codex, where a chronicle from the year 1234 mentions that Danylo of Halych, while assisting the Kievan Grand Princes in their battle with Michael of Chernigov, had liberated several towns, including Sosnytsia.

The build of the factory was completed in 1935. Bought in 2005 by Mittal Steel, the company is one of the most important businesses in Ukraine and a globally important steel producer. It is the largest steel manufacturer in Ukraine and largest manufacturer of both reinforcing bar and wire rod in the former Soviet Union. The company also produces processed iron ore concentrates for both own use and market.
In 2004, Kryvorizhstal produced over 7 million tonnes of crude steel, and mined over 17 million tonnes of iron ore. As of 2005, the company employed about 57,000 people, which was reduced to 37,000 by 2011.

Krasnodon was established in 1914 as the settlement of Sorokino. It soon became one of the centers of the coal mining industry of the Donbass region. By the Decision of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, on 28 October 1938 it was renamed to Krasnodon. The population of Krasnodol is about 44.000 (2019).
In 2016 the city was renamed Sorokyne as part of decommunization in Ukraine.
The Young Guard was an underground anti-fascist Komsomol organization. They were active during World War II, until January 1943.
They carried out several acts of sabotage and protest before being destroyed by German forces. Most members of the Young Guard, about 80 people, were tortured and then executed by the Germans.
The Germans knew about the existence of the underground and tried to discover its membership. Finally they succeeded in this, helped by treachery within the organization. Just 11 members managed to evade their pursuers.
All the arrested people were tortured. 71 of them, many of them still alive, were thrown into the 53 meter deep pit of Coal Mine Number 5 and some were shot. Just five days later, on 14 February 1943 Krasnodon was liberated by the Red Army.
After the war they recieved many tributes. Surviving members were highly decorated with medals, a book and film were made and many towns, settlements, streets of Soviet cities were also named after the organization and its members.
Even in St. Petersburg (former Leningrad) a monument was placed for the Young Guard.
