Etch made in Hungary with signature. Beautyful etch made about the 1918 Austro-Hungary strike.
The 1918 Austro-Hungarian January strike was a strike which spread across Austria-Hungary between January 3 and 25, 1918 demanding better living and working conditions and an end to World War I.
There had been strikes in early 1917 by Viennese workers in response to food shortages. However by the winter of 1917 the situation had got worse. However news of the Bolshevik seizure of power in Russia encouraged workers in Vienna and more generally across Europe to emulate their example with the demand that the war be ended or more strikes would be organised.
The strike in Hnagry was started by Budapest streetcar workers on the morning of 18 January. They were protesting about the ban on reports of the events in Austria. By noon the strike had spread across all industries, and 40,000 workers took part in fifteen different demonstrations which were prevented by the police from converging on the centre of Budapest. The Hungarian Social Democratic Party declared a general strike. The following day the strike spread to Nagykanizsa and Szeged.

Propaganda poster from Hungary made in the 1970’s. The text on the poster says:” Civilian protection, the most important responsibility is human life and goods. Get ready for protection”. The poster was made by Pal Gyorgy.
Pal Gyorgy’s (1906-1986) first posters appeared in 1927. From that time on, he designed numerous commercial posters. After 1945 he became a frequently commissioned poster artist, and he designed several propaganda posters during the 1950’s. He designed posters for the election campaigns of the ruling communist party, Népfront (People’s Front), which was the only political party at the time.
In the 1950’s his designs followed the strict socialist realist manner. He used the established visual elements: smiling workers, cheering crowds and symbols of the new regime: red star and flag, the new coat of arms of Hungary, sickle and hammer. The target audience of his posters was the workers and the peasantry: they depict everyday people in simple settings, with shrill colors.

This poster was one of three designs made by Istvan Orosz of his own accord and offered to the Hungarian Democratic Forum. The fragment of a crucifixion scene is an expression of sympathy for those who died in the revolution in Romania in 1989.
The town Timisoara (in Romanian) or Temesvár (in Hungarian), was the flash point for events that resulted in the overthrow of Ceausescu’s communist dictatorship in Romania. The fact that the revolution was a common cause for Romanians and Hungarians is emphasized by the image of a double arm and the two squares in the countries’ national colours.
Orosz’s posters were among the most popular graphic designs during the period of political transition in Hungary. At the same time, they were considered works of high artistic quality and collectors’ pieces.
In December 1989 a popular uprising began in Timișoara against the Communist regime of Nicolae Ceauşescu. The Hungarian Calvinist pastor László Tőkés was ordered to be deported by the Securitate, or secret police, and as a reaction his house was surrounded by members of his church.
The Communist administration ordered the army to fire at the congregation. However, a number of army officers refused to open fire and sided with the people. That was the beginning of the Romanian Revolution of 1989, which ended the Communist regime a week later.
Timișoara was declared the first Free Town on 20 December 1989, suffering 1,104 reported deaths and 3,352 wounded during the revolution.
